ABOUT KATE KAYE
Kate Kaye has been a journalist telling deeply-reported stories with words and sound in various reporting and editorial roles since 1999. She’s created several audio documentary podcasts including City Surveillance Watch, a 3-part series that takes listeners across the USA, digging deep into stories that illuminate how and why cities are using surveillance tech; Spilling Grain, which features oral histories of life and work among Buffalo, New York’s grain elevators; and Banned in PDX, a series tracking Portland’s groundbreaking facial recognition ban. Kaye also reported and edited Saving Oregon’s Rocky Coast, a multimedia series for Oregon’s Jefferson Public Radio about Oregon’s rocky intertidal ecosystem. The majority of Kaye’s journalism work has focused on data use, emerging technology and the impacts of tech on people. Her reporting has been published in Protocol, MIT Technology Review, CityLab, OneZero, WSJ, Fast Company, and many other outlets, and it’s been heard on NPR, American Public Media’s Marketplace and other radio programs and podcasts. Kaye is also author of Campaign ’08: A Turning Point for Digital Media, a 2009 book telling the story of the most advanced digital political campaigns in history. Learn more about and read her work, including her ongoing investigative reporting about use of surveillance tech and algorithmic systems by city government where she lives in Portland, Oregon on her independent reporting and research site, RedTailMedia.org.
